The beginning of July and it is time: The Wachau is once again glowing the juiciest of orange.
The time of the apricot harvest has begun and they are plucked from the tree, one-by-one, by hand. Which takes some time given the estimated 80,000 apricot trees.
Up to the harvest high point - from mid July into August - the Wachau is all about the fruit.
The apricot likes it warm, is well able to withstand dryness and generates aromas which intensify with greater temperature differentials between day and night, at the time of ripening. One could say: Where wine grows well, that is where the apricot feels at home.
.... and life can be just this sweet too.
